A very touching memoir!

What a wonderful auto-fictional novel by Abdourahman A. Waberi : Pourquoi tu danses quand tu marches? (JC lattes, 2019) One day walking to school in Paris 5-year old Béa asks her Papa, Aden, why he dances when he walks. By “dances” she refers to his funny limp that favors his weak leg. To fully answer her, Aden must tell her the story of his childhood in Djibouti. Through his simple, soft and moving narrative he brings us all back with him to Djibouti in the late 1960s and 1970s, when the country was called TFAI, Territoire Francais Des Afars et Issas. To his Chateau d’eau neighborhood and early years in which he suffered from various illnesses, felt neglected by his distant mother, Zahra, and his father Papa Le Tige who worked late hours in his souvenir shop, and endured regular torment from Johnny the class bully. And the same childhood during which he found his passion for learning and in particular for literature and writing, encouraged by his teacher Mme Annick. And was nurtured by his Grand Mere Cochise and his Tante Dayibo, had his first crush on the beautiful housemaid Ladane. I loved the form of addressing his daughter throughout the narrative, “tu sais Bea, “…It made the sentences more personal, raised the emotional stakes. I also appreciated the honesty and historical perspective he gives. Like how Aden praises the French education he receives and opportunities it gives him, while also showing the weight of colonialism felt by ordinary people, like when when little Aden asks Tante Dayibo, seeing their loud trucks pass by, what the French legionnaires are doing in their country. She answers “parce que ce sont nos colonisateurs”. Aden doesn’t understand the word “colonisateurs” si she explains: “parce qu’ils sont plus forts que nous”. A very touching memoir! Waberi is most definitely a new favorite author!
