We can't say enough about this series inspired by Welsh folklore. It follows the adventures of Taran the "Assistant Pig Keeper" who is tasked with protecting the prophetic pig, Hen-Wen. The adventure begins when Taran loses Hen-Wen and goes into the forest to find the pig and faces various threats namely the evil Arawn and his Cauldron-born army of the undead. On his quest to protect the kingdom, he encounters a an incredible cast of characters, each with their distinctive personalities and ticks many of whom leave you laughing out loud: from the sniveling, hilarious creature Gurgi, to the feisty Princess Eilonwy who knows her mind and is a master of metaphors. This series has all the wonder and adventure of a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, but the language and flow of the text is more elegant than these and most other middle grade children's novels we have read.
